Airport History

The Okeechobee County Airport is a general aviation airport located 3 mi (4.82 km) northwest of Okeechobee, in Okeechobee County, Florida. The Airport was opened in April 1940 as Conners Field. It was leased by the United States Army Air Corps in 1941 as an auxiliary training field, and used by the Hendricks Army Airfield B-17 Flying Fortress training school near Sebring during World War II.  The runways and other facilities were improved by the Army, and the Airport was used for training touch-and-go landings and emergencies. No permanent military units or personnel were assigned. With the end of the war in 1945, the site was returned for civil use. Since then, Okeechobee County Board of County Commissioners have maintained this Airport as a general aviation airport ever since.

Okeechobee County is proud of our Airport. It has been designed and operated to provide a safe, friendly and well-maintained facility to serve the current and future commercial, corporate, governmental, and general aviation needs of Okeechobee County and southern Florida. Okeechobee County Airport is located approximately 45 miles west of Port Saint Lucie.  The primary highway access to the airport from the north and south is via US Routes 98 and 441. Access from the west and east is by State Routes 70 and 710.  Other roads in the vicinity include State Route 78 and County Route 68.
